Terms of Service

Section 1

Agreement and eligibility

These Terms of Service are an agreement between you and Locus and govern your use of the Locus mobile application, hosted purchase pages, and related reading, document-processing, audio, artificial-intelligence, synchronization, and community features (the Service).

By creating an account, purchasing credits, or using the Service, you agree to these terms. You must be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age required where you live. If you are not yet the age of legal majority, you may use Locus only with permission from a parent or legal guardian.

Section 2

Your account

Some features require a Locus account. You agree to provide accurate information, keep your sign-in credentials secure, and tell us if you believe your account has been accessed without permission.

You may not sell, rent, transfer, or share your account in a way that defeats account, purchase, or usage limits.

Section 3

What Locus does

Locus helps you read, listen to, organize, understand, and discuss books and documents. Depending on the features you use, Locus may upload and process files, extract or reformat text, generate audio, create summaries or explanations, synchronize reading data, and enable sharing or collaboration.

Features may change as the Service develops. We may add, remove, limit, or modify features, but we will not take away purchased credits or paid access contrary to these terms or applicable law.

Section 4

Your books, documents, and other content

You keep ownership

As between you and Locus, you keep all rights you hold in books, documents, notes, highlights, recordings, messages, images, and other material you submit (User Content). These terms do not transfer ownership of your User Content to Locus.

Permission needed to provide the Service

You give Locus a limited, non-exclusive, worldwide license to host, copy, transmit, format, convert, analyze, and otherwise process User Content only as reasonably necessary to provide requested features, deliver results, maintain and secure the Service, prevent abuse, and comply with law.

Locus does not have permission to sell your private User Content or publish it to other users unless you deliberately use a sharing feature. Private User Content will not be used to train generalized AI models without separate, affirmative consent.

Your responsibility

You must own your User Content or have permission to upload and process it. Purchasing or possessing a book does not always include the right to redistribute it. You may not use Locus to distribute infringing copies, defeat digital-rights protections, or violate another person’s rights.

Section 5

Shared and community content

If you intentionally share content through a Book Club, invitation, public link, or another collaborative feature, you direct Locus to make that content available to the people or audience you select. You remain responsible for what you share and for choosing the appropriate audience.

Removing content or leaving a group may not remove copies another user lawfully saved or information that must temporarily remain in backups, security records, or legal records.

Section 6

AI-generated and processed results

Automated systems may generate text, audio, metadata, explanations, summaries, questions, or other results. Generated results may be incomplete, inaccurate, misleading, or unsuitable for your purpose. Review important results rather than treating them as authoritative.

Locus is a reading tool and does not provide legal, medical, financial, or other professional advice. To the extent permitted by law, you may use results generated specifically for you, subject to any rights that apply to the underlying User Content.

Section 7

Locus Credits

What credits are

Locus Credits are prepaid units for eligible processing features. Credits are not money, stored value, a bank account, an investment, or a transferable asset. They have no cash value outside Locus and may not be sold or transferred between users.

Prices, expiration, and use

Checkout displays the number of credits and the price before you confirm payment. Purchased credits do not expire while your account remains open and Locus continues to support credits. Promotional credits may have separate conditions disclosed when granted.

Processing costs may vary by document length, selected features, audio duration, or complexity. Locus will communicate the expected credit cost before submitting a request whenever reasonably practicable and will not retroactively increase the disclosed cost of a completed request.

Failed processing

If our systems confirm that credits were deducted but processing failed before a usable result was generated, the deducted credits will be restored. Credits ordinarily are not restored merely because you dislike a successfully generated result or the source material was incomplete or poor quality.

We may correct a balance following a documented billing error, duplicate grant, refund, chargeback, fraud, or technical mistake.

Section 8

Purchases, refunds, and subscriptions

Purchases may be processed by Apple, RevenueCat, Stripe, or another disclosed payment provider. Their terms and privacy practices may also apply. Apple handles refunds for purchases made through Apple.

Except where law provides otherwise, credit purchases are final after the credits have been used. You may request a refund for an unused web credit purchase within 14 days. If a refund is issued, the corresponding credits will be removed.

Prices and taxes are shown before purchase. Future price changes will not reduce credits already purchased. Locus does not currently require a recurring subscription to use purchased credit packs. If subscriptions are introduced, their price, period, renewal terms, benefits, and cancellation method will be disclosed before purchase.

Section 9

Acceptable use

You may not use the Service to:

• violate law or another person’s rights;
• upload or share material you do not have the right to use;
• distribute malware or interfere with the Service;
• bypass access, payment, usage, or security controls;
• automate abusive purchasing or processing activity;
• impersonate, harass, threaten, exploit, or harm another person; or
• create or distribute unlawful or seriously harmful content.

Locus may take proportionate action in response to suspected violations, including limiting a feature, removing unlawfully shared content, suspending an account, or reporting conduct when required.

Section 10

Third-party services and privacy

The Service may interact with app stores, payment processors, hosting providers, AI providers, public-domain catalogs, and other third parties. Locus does not control their independent services, and your use of them may be subject to separate terms.

Locus will publish a separate Privacy Policy before production launch explaining the information collected, why it is processed, which providers receive it, retention, deletion, and available privacy rights.

Section 11

Suspension and account deletion

You may stop using Locus at any time and may request account deletion through available account controls. Locus may suspend or terminate access for material or repeated violations, fraud, nonpayment, or serious security or legal risk. When reasonably possible, notice and an opportunity to correct the issue will be provided.

If you voluntarily delete an account, unused credits are not redeemable for cash except where required by law or allowed by the refund policy. If Locus permanently discontinues its paid credit system, it will provide reasonable notice and an opportunity to use purchased credits or another remedy required by law.

Section 12

Availability and liability

Locus works to keep the Service reliable, but it may occasionally be unavailable, delayed, or changed. To the maximum extent permitted by law, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available.” Keep independent copies of important source documents and results.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Locus will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, data, or business interruption. Total liability for claims relating to the Service will not exceed the greater of the amount paid to Locus during the previous 12 months or US $100. These limits do not apply where prohibited by law.

Section 13

Terms specific to Apple

If you obtain Locus through Apple’s App Store:

• these terms are between you and Locus, not Apple;
• Locus, not Apple, is responsible for the app and its content;
• your license is non-transferable and limited to Apple-branded products you own or control as permitted by Apple’s usage rules;
• Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support;
• Locus, not Apple, is responsible for product, compliance, consumer-protection, and intellectual-property claims; and
• Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce this section.

Section 14

Changes and general terms

Locus may update these terms as the Service changes. Material changes affecting paid features will receive reasonable advance notice. Changes apply prospectively and will not retroactively alter completed purchases except where required by law or needed to correct fraud or a technical error.

If part of these terms is unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain effective. Mandatory consumer rights where you live are not taken away by these terms.
